Just as an FYI, the magic is based on bones--which is fine if you are talking centuries-dead mythological creatures, but a little more problematic if you are talking about living ones. So there's an ick-ish moment or two.
It's likely in the grouping of best books--stand-alone, new to me. I peeked at your shelves. My guess is that if you can tolerate a slightly alternate-reality Southern California, you'd enjoy it.
