I think you'll all enjoy it. If nothing else, you'll probably find yourself needing an art museum fix. Since reading this book, I've added such a visit to my to-do list.
There are certainly many detours. Since my favorite parts of the novel were the beginning and the ending, I would've been content with less detours, but, as you said, the ride was still amazing.
Since I didn't feel like carrying the heavy book with me I ended up listening to the audiobook. The narrator is fantastic, easy to listen to and captures the voices (and accents) of each character perfectly. I agree with you on the author's use of language - beautiful.
Think of all the ridiculous questions (ie, are you actually reading that? is that the Bible?) you've missed out on by not carrying around the physical book. Good choice. :)
