I've actually recommended that very series though I haven't finished it. I really enjoyed the first book, and got halfway through the second but accidentally forgot to finish it before my loan expired. I thought they were very well written, but they just never captivated me fully, and I have a friend who was looking for books by authors who aren't white, so I recommended them highly as a great series. But I did give her about ten million warnings that I hadn't finished them, so I obviously wasn't fully comfortable. I think an ending can change the first book only if the first book can't be seen as a standalone and has a cliffhanger or such that means one must read the next book to reach a conclusive point.
Hahaha, I think so many people recommended Champion/Legend after Allegiant. I felt like that fall was the time when everyone was talking about both books and YA dystopia in general.
I have been hearing that I just need to give more warnings that I haven't finished the series! I hope your friend enjoyed your rec!
And good point about the standalones and cliffhangers! If the series plot is eclipsing each book's plot, then it probably will get harder to recommend the book on its own...
