It's definitely not a book for the toy box or playroom bookshelf; at least not if you want it to stay in one piece. It's art as much as it is science, and delicate.
My personal plan is to share it with my nieces and nephew, but only together - I'll hold the book and work the page-corner flaps, and we can explore the pages together. I'm pretty sure this will work great with 3 of them... one of them might not have the patience, lol.
The Sabuda and Reinhart pop-ups are incredible for the complexity of the paper art. It's nice to hear the text is just as good. I do have a small quibble, though, that's entirely personal. Stylistically the graphic art doesn't wow me as much as the complexity of the 3-D effects. I'm still considering getting one of their joint or individual books, though, because, man, the pop-ups are so awesome!
Great job with the pics, and a special thanks to MT for lending a hand (or two) so we could see the pop-ups! :D
Hmm... I thought most of the graphic art here was pretty good - a few of the smaller dinosaurs could have been done better; their details were sort of hard to distinguish sometimes, but some of the bigger popups - that T Rex's eye almost looked real at certain angles, lol. But... this and the mega fauna book are the only ones I have so I might not be comparing apples to apples, so-to-speak. What pop up would you recommend from a graphic art perspective?
MT was quite pleased to be recognised, lol. He had been lobbying for photo credits for his hands. :D
As much as I love pop-ups, I'm new to buying them for myself, although I've given a few as gifts. So this is strictly going by the pics and videos I've seen, and once I have one of Sabuda & Reinhart's in my hot little hands I may feel differently. I tend to like the depth/dimensionality of more realistic artwork and theirs has a flatter, more simplistic visual quality. The Creatures of the Deep has a more lush look to it. And the Snow Queen book I originally mentioned has gorgeous artwork, too. It's just personal taste, like I said.
MT definitely deserves the photo credits for his well manicured but very manly hands. :P
