I haven't read Crash, but he brings up the car crash/sex combo in The Kindness of Women. There it is also mixed up with the idea of 'modern art'.

Very mixed feelings about Ballard (based on one book only). I do like his writing, but it's disturbing how the characters are not only unlikeable, but don't like themselves either. Or maybe other people don't find them unlikeable? I don't know.

That is part of his thing. You have to be ready for a writer who does not care about relateable characters. That's sort of a heresy these days, but its part of what I like about him. I haven't read The Kindness of Women yet.
