I vaguely remember her asking for an e-ARC of a certain hyped up book a while ago and I thought it was based on being a new/naive blogger. A Kindle though, seriously...
I actually did not know that requesting ARCs was illegal (well, unless asking for the copyrighted digital files or hardcopies from non-copyright holders or their agents like publishers pm netgalley, etc.), but she does sound out there and that thread is horrible to ignore how many people she bugged or how often. I did know an ARC falls under same copyright laws as the draft or final version. Unless copyrightholder releases into public domain, so old it goes out of copyright, or grants permission no, arc or otherwise, ebook can be shared except as licensed.
I don't know those GR members. I did roll my eyes when they called Raashana a bully then turned around and called her a bitch and told her to fuck off. Members of the debate team, they are not. :/
Reading over the thread makes me sad on the inside. Like Nenia pointed out, it isn't good for anyone. Also, the last statement got right under my skin. "Forgive me, forgive me, do you all just forgive me??" Eek.
I tried commenting and reasoning with her, but after response I had to walk away. The amount of spinning she's doing is ridiculous and for that matter has no logic.
Looks like the thread has been deleted, Khanh. I read some of it last night and it seems ridiculous that someone would continue to do something illegal like this after several other users have alerted them. Sorry you have to deal with this!
YOU'RE GIVING AWAY KINDLES AND YOU'RE NOT TELLING ME?!
:D
I missed her status post but she's been in my radar for a while (wasn't saying anything because I thought you guys were tight ^_^). I've seen her asking someone for a copy of an egalley (not a print ARC which I learned from that thread is perfectly okay) of Winner's Curse in his review. She got called out for it and after much profuse apologising and polite and patient advice from everyone else I thought she'd learned her lesson.
Can seniors get your old deregistered kindles when you get a new one?
Several reasons: degrading vision meaning easier to read on kindles where you can adjust fonts, downsizing means givi up a lot of your library (moving to smaller condo, not nursing home, into a relative's house), and the older kindles that had audio (paperwhite doesn't) can double for use in "music for memory" programs increasingly showing effectiveness against Alzheimer's and other memory issues...
The Fire is a backlit versus eInk screen. Just a consideration if getting mostly as an eReader; I obviously have no clue how your eyes handle either screen. My first generation paperwhite kindle no longer does audiobooks like the other kindles (haven't checked if that was put back on current Paperwhites) but the light on it and on the nook glow does not bother me like backlit reading.
Of course other cheaper or more expensive tablets that will run kindle and other eReader apps are also backlit (kindle device, not just app, is required for prime lending library loans).
We've all got Fire HD's here and none of us would be without ours now. We started out with the paperwhites but they're not a patch on the Fire's. I use mine for music and so does my hubby, son and daughter. They have mp3's that they use, mostly, but like to listen while they read sometimes.
Yes, I play music on my older kindles (paperwhite either won't or I haven't figured out how). The older ones have good wispernet for when not around trusted wifi. Helps drown out distractions while I'm reading, not lugging additional devices, and for some reason I'm around the type of people who will interrupt you reading or keying but leave you alone if wearing earplugs to listen to music. I exercise way better and longer if I have music or lose track of time buried in a book.
I actually prefer any other tablet than the kindle fires and the nook hd ones. I can do way more, better, faster and sometimes cheaper on other tablets with less proprietary os and restrictions. Nothing wrong with the fire and nothing against it other than being limited; just not the bang for your buck, does less and even slower if needing high security settings that make you disable some amazon "speed-up" options.
Also likely uses plenty of piracy apps/software that illegally breaks file protections, presumably including the expiration dates since it sounds like she is either trying to amass more ARCs than she can read before the legal copies expire or repackaging for her own profit to sell privately or on the torrent sites. ARCs fetch way more money than published ebooks. Despite being illegal, we all know the "entitled" who feel that merely by wanting something it makes it right and no way should their special selves have to wait with the unwashed masses for book release..even if it means buying pirated copies because the authors should just be grateful their special selves deign to read it.
All digital sales of ARCs are likely illegal (not impossible an author or publisher could give permission; NetGalley definitely doesn't and I've never seen a copyright notice giving permission for any not put or aged into public domain—but of course I haven't seen "everything"). Without explicit permission to resale, illegal. With permission, illegal to sell more than just your licensed copy (and you cannot keep a copy); violates copyright. Think of the rare occurrence where copyright grans the resale of your copy as if a hardcopy -- you still cannot pass out or sale more copies than you legally obtained or it is just as if you tko the book into work and photocopied a few hundred to ebay.
Sales of ARC hardcopies depend on what the copyright page and ARC agreement says. It's not uncommon to say you can keep for yourself but otherwise should destroy. It's not uncommon to prohibit resale prior a certain date but permit after. If not explicitly prohibited, I know people who once book is published donate or ebay ARC copies and who knows where those wind up.
I was going to reply to author Colleen Oakes on her GR's page, and look what i found (scroll all the way down to the comments section...) https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/6520834.Colleen_Oakes
I wonder if the author gave it to her?
Unbelievable.
Just requesting ARCs being illegal is new to me.
Sorry you're enduring such childish behavior.

But...since I'm here anyway....Can I haz a kindle?
Worth a try :D

Khanh....can I haz an ipad. If you're all out of ipads an arc would do. LMAO!
