Interesting review. I felt the same way about the movie. It actually made me totally depressed and I couldn't figure out why.

I haven't watched the movie, but I think, I understand what you mean. Although most of the time I enjoyed reading the book, I felt really unsatisfied and a little bit confused after finishing it - and for that I think I have to blame Sarah's arbitrariness.
