Over a period of years, President Ford sat down with journalist Thomas DeFrank in a series of off the record interviews with the caveat that DeFrank could "Write It When I'm Gone" --and that is what DeFrank did and that is what he called his book.

Thank you for this bit of knowledge. I'm going to look for DeFrank's work.

This really does sound fascinating. Should I read All the President's Men first? or would my general pop culture knowledge of Watergate serve as enough context?

Honestly, you don't need to read ...Men to read this book. This is more about the cover up and THE TAPES than the break-in itself.
