I listened to the BBC Adaptation on audio (and the actor who plays the devil sound a lot like Alan Rickman). The cast made the different voices a lot easier to take in.

I love the book, but I have to also second the rec for the BBC adaptation. It's fabulous! Maybe it'll help you get into the book, too?
