I would say poor Lydia, but I hate her too.

A friend of mine once suggested that Lydia actually works well as an idealized more "modern" woman: life of the party, care-free, etc.

Given Lydia's character (dumb as straw, manipulative and paper-thin shallow to begin with), that's a pretty damning statement about modern society ...

Well maybe "idealized" isn't quite the right word, but what's expected, say.... But yes, it was somewhat damning of modern society in the way I interpreted it.
