Some of the animals die, being that is set in an apocalypse, but the only scenes where there is intentional cruelty to animals, it's implied rather than actually shown.

Edit: I forgot that someone does get in a fight with a parrot, and the parrot is the main character, so that might count as cruelty, but I felt that in was more a battle injury than what someone would normally consider cruelty.
