Excellent review. It's a shame that the author didn't develop the characters better. Is there a reason, you think, why the background story isn't developed further?
Not sure, lack of page count, time, editor help, talent, and ability, probably play a part. I know the last 5 yrs I've found myself complaining about editing. A few days ago I saw a thread with authors talking about lack of editor help at big publishing.
I'm pretty sure I've read a few anthologies with her work in them. My impression was such that I haven't actually bought any of her books. There are some contemporary authors whose main focus is to contrive to get the H/h to have sex, and the rest of the story is an afterthought, with a HEA tacked on to call it a romance instead of erotica.
Oh yes, the focus on only sex has been infiltrating historical the last couple years too. Sex for sex sake isn't why I read these books, I like the emotional build up, so when that is missing, the whole thing does fall flat for me. You nailed it though with the story feeling contrived just so the main couple have sex.
