What's the story in the book about? What kind of humor is it?

Also, those tacos look great. At first, I wanted to say that I made something very similar for dinner, but then realised that the only similarity was that I had "something" on rice. LoL. So, yes, no similarity whatsoever.
A woman discovers her father had a mistress at his funeral, then learns her mother knew about it. Her mother had cancer scares but her father always banded the family together and our heroine grew up repressing fears in favor of believing in happy endings because her mother ends up beating cancer and her parents marriage seemed so perfect and loving.
She ends up staying at her father's "love shack" after breaking up with perfect boyfriend who can't handle the depression that is hitting her. She's a romance author who can't seem to write romance anymore and then her next door neighbor turns out to be a college rival. They end up having a sort of competition about who can write a book in the other's genre (the college rival writes fiction in what the heroine calls Hemingway fanfiction).

The humor is wit snark and the way they riff off each other is perfect. Subtle underlining pain with comments and emotions right now. I'm only 25% in so, probably too excited right now but I'm coming off a mediocre book.

I think rice with "toppings" can be called similar! Lol.

Oh, this really does sound delightful. I may have chuckled at "Hemingway fanfiction". :)
The heroine said men that write like that are "coldly horny" lol.

I was on the fence about this one. No one has described it he way you have. I will definitely pick it up.
The cover and synopsis makes it sound fluffy and rom-com, which I don’t think fits the tone of story at all. I’m half way through and a few issues have crept up but I’d be surprised if my rating drops below four stars. It’s a very good marriage between women’s fiction and romance right now.
