I thought it was heavy on a lot of description of military strategy adapted to space versus military action in space—which maybe I would have enjoyed way more if more into the military stuff.
That said, I did get hooked on the Honor character so have been continuing the series. It really does get more character-driven with a lot of twists. And a lot more active stuff happens so maybe the first book suffered from all the setup and you'd enjoy more in the series; but, maybe not in that it does continue to concentrate heavily on the military side.
