It was like Dexter for kids... It was obvious, slowly paced, unfunny, and suffered greatly from telling rather than showing

Ah, I can see where you're coming from, being a Dexter fan. I never got hooked on that series myself (the first few episodes failed to catch my attention), but I ended up loving the book. The plot was slow, and it was a little too boy-genius for my liking, but I absolutely loved Jasper's complexity and internal conflict

Except there was no internal conflict, just a lot of internal hand wringing. If he'd actually been in conflict with himself, and if he was at all the psychopath he claimed to be, we would've seen him actually try to kill without any concept of it being wrong. It just didn't work for what in wanted to be for me.
