Great review -- I think this is my favorite book by Hardy (and a reread just might be due sometime soon). Like you, I'm finding Henchard hard to empathize with initially (certainly much harder than, say, Tess), but that all changes later when fate catches up with him.

It is certainly a wonderful book and as with most great fiction, it stands the test of time, I think. To be elevated onto my 'favourites' shelf, which puts it in good company.
