I just hope it's not Gaiman. Shouldn't judge that book specifically, since I haven't read it, but ugh. He annoys me.

A Stranger in Olondria and Ancillary Justice look interesting, though.

I thought Ocean was weak, but I'm obviously in the minority. It was too nostalgic, among other things. But I bet you'd totally dig the other two.
YAY! Some-one who agrees with me about Ocean!
Although the bit I heard him read live was really good, it kinda wasn't when I read it myself again later. Isn't that strange?

I think your criticism of Oceans is valid. His books and short fiction have a tendency to mine the same territory over and over. Oceans just happened to be the most effective for me. Graveyard I could not connect to at all. The bathtub scene in Oceans made me put it down for like 2 days, and recontextualize a lot of the magic as parental alcoholism. I don't think that reading is correct - the end makes fuck all sense if it is - but that worked well enough for me to have a more emotional response to this one that most of his previous ones.

Waxing about Oceans aside, I hope AJ wins. Goodness do I love that book. I'm reading Olondria right now, and I'm not nearly as in love with it. I'm only about 30% of the way through, though, so maybe it's about to drag my heart behind it's horse.

Kinda everything about the dad is Not Okay. I read it as parental abuse too, which doesn't work with the ending at all, and what ended up frustrating me a lot. Why were we even bothering with this evil nanny character when the real trauma was going on with his dad? She's there to give people what they want, and he wants to fuck teenagers and kill his son? I don't know. Plus, I really hate sermons about how great kids are and how grown ups have no wonder or imagination. He does that all the time in Ocean.

I think Olondria might be more a Ceridwen Insanity book.
Plus he can't make toast!
