My introduction to the Brontes was when I was a child of 11 or so, when I read "The Return of the Twelves" (aka The Twelve and the Genii), which is a novel about the soldiers, and the Brontes juvenalia gets a mention, as well. It won a Carnegie Medal about 50 years ago, I believe.
