A world explained mostly in footnotes does not substitute for world-building, just not good writing. You should have DNF'ed sooner.

It might work to have a few footnotes/endnotes in future books in a series to avoid repetitively dumping info on fans who already know it from previous books (even then usually works better in a recap, glossary or prologue labeled so longtime fans know they are free to skip if still remember previous books).

I completely agree! Such a shame really, as it really had potential :(

I read a Kristoff book once and thought it was lousy. He's not much of a writer and his vision of how people behave and interact seemed to come from a video game or anime.
