Wouldn't we all? (I actually guessed the third riddle the very first time I saw the opera. Trouble is, I'd never have gotten as far, because I did *not* guess the first two ...)

Wow, those are some gorgeous pictures! It sounds like you had a blast-I'm envious. :)
It's beautiful down there, and we were incredibly lucky weather-wise. There had been talk of thunderstorms all of last week, and even on Saturday we weren't entirely sure yet that the weather would hold. (If there had been a thunderstorm and they'd have been obliged to cancel the performance over an hour after the beginning, there would have been no refund -- risk of attending an outdoor performance.) Luckily, the weather did hold until we were back home yesterday afternoon. *Today* the sky finally came crashing down on us, so whoever had tickets for tonight would probably not have been as lucky ...

It's an incredible venue, though, and they've done a phantastic job with almost all of the productions we've seen there in the past 10 years.
Thank you, and ... good luck! :)

Such a wonderful post.

Thanks TA! You must have been well made up!
Thank you! All told, it was a perfect day -- or, well, afternoon and evening at least ...

Great pictures and post. Sounds like you had fab time. :) And Artful, eh?
Yep. I've read "Shire" in the interim, too, btw, and liked it better than I'd anticipated after your mild skepticism. So, it's all good! :)

In Shire, does she name the castle she used to drive to?
I think she does, but I'm going to have to double check to make sure I'm not making something up in my own mind ... (As you can tell, I have the memory of a leaky sink trap these days. I read that book last week, for crying out loud.)
I'm sure there must be organized tours from Britain, though all told it's very easy to make arrangements individually -- and probably less expensive, too ... The only thing is that you need to get in early these days; it's not as bad as Glyndebourne and Bayreuth in that respect, but you used to be able to wait a lot longer than now to order your tickets, including for weekend performances.

Absolutely beautiful pictures! I didn’t know the story at all, so I really enjoyed your explanation of it.
Thank you, and you're welcome. :) It's not the most cohesive of plots (the insta-love moment at the end is only the most glaring example of unresolved inconsistencies, and Calaf's attitude to Liù's self-sacrifice is nearly as bad), but the music is divine and that alone makes it worthwhile -- even more so in a spectacular production such as this one.

Btw, I meant to make the aria names active links -- I'll remedy that now. (ETA: Done.)
This is lovely! Thank you so much for posting! In regards to the riddles, I probably would have lost my head. I am terrible at riddles.
You're welcome -- and these riddles are *meant* not to be solved, after all! :)

This sounds amazing! Thanks for your wonderful post--while reading and looking at the photos I could almost imagine being there.
Oh wow, thank you in turn ...

Such beautiful pictures! And I would have LOVED to see Turandot! Especially live! Ah well, I'll just stick to bellowing along to Gilbert and Sullivan dvds at the top of my lungs :D I think I might have the answers to all three riddles, but Imma wait and see the answers so I don't make a fool of myself :D
Thank you -- and I don't think anybody could possibly make a fool of themselves with these. OK, I'll wait a little longer, then I'll post the answers in between spoiler tags. Meanwhile, happy bellowing! :)

(Which Gilbert & Sullivan is it, btw?)

Usually Trial By Jury (The Ali MacGregor/David Hobson/Anthony Warlow version); but also The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, Pirates of Penzance, or Patience. Any or all of these can be heard in any given week at my place :D Along with my dulcet tones, of course...
Love Pirates of Penzance. And as for bellowing, better than speaking along all one's favorite lines from one's favorite movies ...
Thank you in turn! I was a great weekend.

Thank you for the marvelous post. And the photos are fantastic. I wonder: what is the painted house? Is it a church? A theatre?
Thank you! The building is Lindau's old city hall. Painting buildings like this traditionally was the Bavarian (and Austrian, and Swiss) way of either saying, "look, this is an important (and / or) public building," or, if privately-owned, "look, I am rich enough to be able to afford this sort of lavish decoration." Lindau is fortunate in still having a fair amount of buildings like this, and the city hall is the crown jewel of all of them.
I'd give my left arm to be able to see the Seebühne...To watch Opera in an environment such as this one, would be my Opera Nirvana. Top-notch Opera freaks me out enough by itself. This then perhaps would leave me senseless. Freaking wonderful post and gorgeous pictures. Hypersalivating...
Thank you! (Need a hanky? :) ) Do you ever have occasion to go back to Munich? If so, Lindau and Bregenz aren't actually too far a drive from there; there's even a (comparatively) new freeway / Autobahn (A 96). Lindau is worth a visit pretty much any time of the year (well, all of Lake Constance, actually) -- if you can also catch a production at Bregenz all the better, but even if not, I think they do guided tours during the months in between productions, too.
When I was there it was all study and very little play. When I went there again, I didn't have much time... I must book holidays there.
Yes, you absolutely should. :) (And I'm not even a fan of most things Bavaria ... or Baden-Württemberg. But I've rather come to love my once-every-two-years-day-in-Lindau-and-Bregenz. Well, OK, Bregenz is in Austria. Not that you'd notice, most of the time, though ...)
Thanks for your kind words, and for taking the time to read! :)

I wish I were able to do this more often, but anyway, when I do, it's fun to share the experience afterwards. And of course become all nostalgic about it ...
OK, I'll post the answers soon. And, thank you, too! My ears are ringing now! :)

So ... anyone still in the land of the living, or are we all zombies at this point?
They looked like that in real as well. Frighteningly impressive.
