I read his first book The Heavens Rise, and found that quite good, although others didn't.

A lot of people liked this one as well, I just didn't like this story, but have hopes for A density of souls...

That one has the highest average rating on GR, so if you were going to take a chance on another, it looks like that would be the one to choose. I have also added it to my TBR list on the strength of the average rating and the fact that I liked a less well liked book more than the majority. Good luck with it.
