Sounds like a protracted revenge on a text he was made to live with for too long. Doesn't sound fun to read. I love your categories.
Likely. I know I discussed all these and more of the morally reprehensible godly bouts in the Old T with my mom when I read the bible. Had some interesting chats with my theology prof about free will and original sin in high-school when the Pentateuco was mandatory read for that class too (catholic school). That was one well read, awesome teacher, and I did end up reading the whole thing, though I doubt my type of interpreting and questions were what the establishment intended. He didn't mind :D

Your tags are priceless. Saramago is one of the authors that I haven;t read but would like to. This one sounds like one that isn't a good start. Are there others you would recommend?
Funny part is I've had those around for a while. I'm a reaction type of tagger, more than category.

Aside from his biblical romps, his works run more to the magical realism, heavy with social commentary. I haven't read all he has written, maybe half? "Death with Interruptions" was good and hilarious, and not as heavy a reading as Blindness (which I loooved, but might not be for everyone). Be warned: he writes the idea, and you rarely, if ever, get any answers.
