The plot of this books sounds like a mess. I mean, how would John getting to know her online actually protect her?

I think the way he explained it was that he was trying to get to know her online as the fake "John", so that he could understand how best to approach her using his undercover identity in real life, which he just used his real name for--Nick. Instead, he just ended up using the "John" identity online to get her to tell him all of her secrets and confide in him everything she wouldn't tell him as Nick.

Truth, though, the book was a pretty big mess.

Yes, Novak has a way of grabbing me with "train-wreck" plotlines/premises, but I thought she did that with just her contemporary romances.

I've only read one of her contemporary romances, but have read mostly the romantic suspense she's written. And I've often described them as fast-paced, forward-moving train wrecks that I can't seem to take my eyes away from.
