I've only ever seen the movie, and I can't say I came away with any different feeling than you did.
Atlas Shrugged is the same way. 1000+ pages of "we have to destroy the world to save it," and then on the last page it's all gone and the "winners" are going to do their rebuilding thing, but they never do. There was no sequel, because apparently all the author cared about was taking down the existing system.
Maybe I need to read more post-apocalypse fiction. Does anyone ever actually rebuild the world? ;-)
