I hated this book. As NZ's only Booker winner (and that being a fairly recent event back then), I had to read it twice in High School, and disliking it is practically sacrilege. And I really did not enjoy it. Some of Keri Hulme's short stories though, are pretty good, she's not a bad writer, but I have to agree with you on this, it's just so many shades of ugly.

NOT having to read any one book makes life so much happier doesn't it - for that reason alone I do not join in group reads. At least you get to choose your own delights nowadays :O)
Was it Oscar Wilde who said we needed a list of what not to read?

I do occasional group reads, but in a very hit and miss manner. And I can't blame high school for my hatred of The Great Gatsby. But in general, any time I get a book pushed at me with "You have to read this" my instinct is to slowly back away, I need a softer sell, more "I loved this book, you should read the blurb"
