Thanks for your great job with this page! BookLikes is by far my favorite book page. For me a perfect addition to all great features I'd wish for PM and a android App :)
BookLikes 4 years ago
Thank you :) We'll do :)
I like all of the proposed changes. My biggest wish is to have the option of making exclusive shelves beyond the three already in place, specifically to keep track of books I didn't finish (DNF or flounced or something to that effect) and books I would like to stay away from (do not read/buy/obtain) to make my catalogue more coherent. Right now, those two shelves imported from GR for me and all ended up on the to-read shelf.

Discussions rooms/groups would be awesome. Exporting my catalogue to have a backup will also be greatly appreciated.

You guys are doing a fantastic job, and I'm so happy I joined this site. :)

I would really like to be able to edit a book's details if/when I see errors. Also the ability to search via ISBN would be great. I've only been here a few days, but I'm already enjoying the difference between here and GR.

I just attempted to search for a book via it's ISBN and got nothing, I mean no action at all. When I clicked on the little search button nothing happened, I tried a number of times and nothing, and I've attempted to search for about 20 books via ISBN today and the same thing happened. When I realised it wasn't working I typed in the title and found the book in a few seconds. So, sorry to disagree with you, but as far as I can tell the search doesn't seem to work with the ISBN.
Moyas Buchgewimmel 4 years ago
I had that problem, too. Trick is to avoid all dashes in ISBN numbers. When you type only numbers into the searchbox you can find your books via ISBN easily. At least it works for me.

Thanks for this list! I am really looking forward to the improvements :) especially the groups/book clubs- and the (customizable) exclusive shelves (I use mine to separate books I own and want to read from my wishlist/shopping list-, and I'd like to have a to-finish shelf). Being able to send a PM will be great too. Thanks for the update :)
I'd love it if for graphic novels you could have a rating for art and rating for story. but I realize this isn't a high priority for most people. I'd also would like the site to be easier to use. It feels a bit cumbersome.

We'll help you find way through. Mail us how can we help :)
Kaethe 4 years ago
That's a great idea. If it were available
, I'd use it on picture books as well.
I'm especially looking forward to the exclusive shelf since my "authors to avoid" ended up as "planning to read" on my dashboard because I didn't want to shelf them as "read." So that awkwardness will be avoided in the future! :D
I'm also seconding the ability to search via ISBN and maybe being able to see which number a book is in a series but I'm guessing that'll be a far future thing.
But I really appreciate all the proposed changes and the very friendly tone on BookLikes so far.

Ooh, great, I was about to make a post!

*Book status updates connected our book review page. Right now I'm making posts connected to the book with tags that I can hopefully search later.
*Easier ways to edit reviews other than having to scroll through blog.
*Clearer reblogging that doesn't make it feel like you're stealing someone else's content. The original author should get comments, etc. Someone thanked me for something I reblogged and I felt bad. Maybe more like Tumblr where it technically all goes back to the original post.
*Easy Spoiler tags so we don't have to mark whole reviews/updates as spoiler.
*Refresh our pages to show correct book numbers (mine has read 420 books for days now, but my import is pretty much done but for some reviews).
*A better community book page where I can see the reviews of people I follow given priority for me or some way to easily see them — my personal number one benefit to social book sites.
*I think the "Read more" link in the book pop-up should take us to the BL book page, not Amazon. It confuses me each time.
*Maybe a way to mark a books as read multiple times.
*A tag cloud on our dash. Or some other easy way to see all our tags and click through them.
*Site notifications so I don't have to get an email about everything I ever commented on.
*A button to enter comments so we can use "enter" in the text field. For elderly laptop reasons I don't have a shift key. At least not one I can press at the same time as another key. I know, it's ridiculous, but my laptop keyboard has failed. So I have no way to make returns in comments (I wrote this on another page.). And it's too easily to accidentally post the comment when you're not ready.

Just want to thank you for:
*Private books/shelves
*Half stars!!
*Getting on private messages
ooh, yes, marking a book as read multiple times would be great!

Me, too, being able to indicate multiple reads. I'd love it if I can actually keep a date for each read.

Great!! Thank you so much!
Hiding spoilers in reviews would be convenient.

Being able to see on a book's page reviews written by your friends separately (maybe even a link to different page)/ at the top.

I also have a question: How are reviews on bookpage's organized? By date? By popularity? I'm confused - I need to know in order to digest data properly.
OK, I do have a request. A way to unsubscribe to notifications on particular posts when I've made a comment? Or is this already available and I just haven't found it yet?
Tami 4 years ago
My wish list is mostly covered (exclusive shelves, group function and pm) - one thing I would like to have is to create some contents in a password protected part. So that I don't have to have everything public, but can decide which parts everybody can see, and what parts only people I befriended can see.
Wow great to hear that all will be implemented, and I see some great things in the comments here which I would love to have too. (spoiler tags, multiple reading dates and a few others) Keep up the great work! Thanks for the wonderful site and I can't wait to see what is coming up.

I would love to be able to make a comment / quote / note while updating my status of a book. Example say I'm 25% done & want to add a quote that shows up with that status update. It would also be great for all your book status updates to be catalogued so you or your friends can view all you comments / quotes / notes at a later time.
Gisele's place 4 years ago
Yes! This is exactly what I would suggest!
Notification page. Once you open notifications (because you had a lot) there is no distinction between the old ones, and the new ones. I now how many new I got, but if it's 23... It would be nice if clicked ones changed appearance.
Ariel Bissett 4 years ago
I love how interactive you are with your users! One suggestion I have, and that I know a lot of my friends really want too, is the ability to have my "Currently Reading" status updates go out into people's dashboards! Everyone loves following people's reading progress: it's fun being able to update my page count and also put a status update like "I sure didn't see that coming!" and then have people comment and interact with me as I read a book! :)
EMorrison 4 years ago
Ariel that is exactly what I'm requesting but I think you have explained it better.
Oh, several of those would be awesome at the very least!
Liz Loves Books 4 years ago
Thank you for being so welcoming and proactive! I second the request for spoiler tags. I use them a lot. Another thing that would be helpful (and it may already exist) is the ability to choose which edition of the book I'm reviewing. The ability to edit comments I've made would also be nice, but it's much lower on my list than all the other things you are working on.

Thank you! Goodreaders have all flocked to your site, and I have to say that I am extremely happy and humbled by how understanding and supportive your community has been with us. My feed is filled with either rants about Goodreads or on "how to customize....." but also these notes, your communication with the community, goes a long way. Just letting us know you hear us, even if you have to continually tell us the same thing over and over, it means a great deal. So thank you for being REACTIVE rather than defensive. This has caused me to invest myself even more within your community. AND HOPEFULLY, the negativity ends soon and we start focusing on our passion for books again. But in the meantime, please bear with us ( :
I'm LOVING the features that you're already looking at and working - Thank you for being so awesome about ideas and suggestions

The one wish that comes to mind in addition is the ability to see the other editions of a book and easily switch between them and/or create a new edition based on a current edition (ie. there's a paperback, but I want a kindle edition etc). If I could go to the paperback edition and create a new one, or see all the other current editions linked together, that would be awesome.

Second, is there a way, when I go to the book page, to see my 'friends' (or those I follow)'s reviews first - I generally use those I know and trust (first) to determine which books I want to add to my shelves.

Spoiler tags in reviews would be awesome.

My last wish, I think, is to have a way to sort for 'top' friends in my feed - following a large number of people can result in things getting lost in the feed, and me missing stuff. If I can sort into different groups and look at them that way (top friends, following, something else?) then it's more likely I'll see what I want.
byeol 4 years ago
First of all: thank you for your hard and good work and keep it up! :)

Secondly, I don't know if this has been suggested before, but how about implementing a feature that when a text post is created as a "Review", i.e. the "Review" checkbox is clicked, it could automatically add author name and title (and series name, if that's possible) as tags for the post? So new review posts would be automatically added to the appropriate tags to aggregate a better collection of reviews for that book.
Ari Bookzilla 4 years ago
Oh
, and the option to stop getting notifications for everything you've commented on, lol.
EMorrison 4 years ago
In my opinion book ratings should be about content & not interest. I know over at goodreads many members were rating 1 stars & 5 stars to books they never read. This skews the book rating. Maybe adding a Not Interested Button could help or maybe a seperate rating for interest only. I know a lot of authors were very confused how an unpublished book could be getting random 1 & 5 star ratings. As a reader (I'm sorry if this offends anyone) I'm only interested in the review of members who have actually read the book.

I would love to see some book exploration system (different from your current explore feature). I want to be able to check a genre's newest releases, the most popular/rated/wanted books (today/this week/this month/this year), etc etc etc. Possibly even a feature that allows finding books based on user given criteria.
SWhitney 4 years ago
Not to sound like a broken record, but thanks so much being so interactive with us. I'm sure your whole team has been working crazy overtime and we definitely appreciate it!!

My favorite things mentioned so far are:
*Customizable exclusive lists
*Being able to look at the series information/read order for books
*Providing review priority on book pages to those you are following.
*More control over the types of updates shown on the dashboard.

One thing I have not seen mentioned is a way to compare books to another members. I use this constantly on goodreads to compare my "kindle owned TBR" shelf to someone else's "5 stars", "romance" "dnf" etc. shelves. It's a great way to weed through all of the books I've bought for cheap over the years and decide what I want to read next. It's also makes it super easy to see if you and another user have the same taste in books for following purposes.

Thanks again!
Thanks for the update! Something I would like is that when we edit one of our reviews and save them...can you please take us back to the place we were? I'm cleaning my reviews now as the formatting didn't take and everytime I save one, it takes me back to the dashboard instead to the review I was updating.

I will definitely throw in my support for discussion groups, exclusive shelves, export to csv, pms, and apps (especially an android app). I truly appreciate the community aspects, will be happy to see those added!

HELP! All those notifications! >< I already had to disable e-mail notifications but I still get them on my dashboard...
SWhitney 4 years ago
On second though. The ability to stop following a particular comment feed seems like it should have priority over anything I said before.
if you go down to the bottom of the comments list, at least when viewing in chrome, you'll see a row of buttons (Like, reblog, etc). The second to last button is "unfollow" click that and you won't get emails
SWhitney 4 years ago
Thanks! Is that unfollowing "BookLIkes" though or just this particular post?
I think it's just this post
no, that's unfollowing booklikes entirely. I haven't see an option to stop following a post you've commented on.
SWhitney 4 years ago
That's what I thought haha. I'm sure there will be an option to do that soon.
A Book to Remember 4 years ago
I'd like to have our posts more organized... as in maybe folders or tabs. Where I can click on "reviews" and it will lead me to all the reviews I've done, or "top 10's" and I can see them all together,... "quotes", "book hauls" etc...
A Book to Remember 4 years ago

Definitely the option for a group of people to edit book details. My books are not completely imported yet, and I already notice a big part of them turning into a mess...:/
Y'all are awesome ! I am so happy to have found you. The community/group was all that was missing from other sites.
I would love a way to control how many notifications I see on my dashboard. I want to follow everyone I know, but that would overwhelm me. Maybe a "top friends" thing to see everything, and everyone else would only show book reviews? I bet this would be really complicated though. :-(
I'd also like to way to stop notifications if we comment on a post! Holy moly overwhelming my inbox/notification on my dashboard. this should be precedent
Familiar Diversions 4 years ago
There are a lot of comments, so maybe this has already been mentioned, but some way to find readers similar to myself (felt the same way about a certain percentage of books in our collections, for example) would be nice. And I also agree with Get Lost in the Stacks' request for a way to stop notifications if we comment on a post. I'm a little nervous about commenting on this one because of all the notifications I know it will get me.
Oh yes please, being able to stop the notifications would be fab
Yeah, they're great, but sometimes you're no longer interested into a particular discussions.
Thank you for a great site! I don't know if anyone has requested this so far but it would be great if when we pull up our review of a book, any quotes that we have related to that book could also appear on that page. As far as I can tell any quotes I have saved so far will go off into the oblivion of old posts and I can't find a good way to pull them up again as they relate to a specific book. Please, please, so very much please and thank you!

Familiar Diversions 4 years ago
As a regular buyer, I liked browsing reviews on a single book, too - it was a good way to get a feel for what a book was like and what the chances were that I would enjoy it. If people have tagged their books with the book's title, you can sort of get a results page of BookLikes' users' reviews, but the search results are a bit unwieldy and I'm not sure if the BookLikes site search goes beyond the tags people chose.
pandalovesyou 4 years ago

Also, I really appreciate it when books in a series are numbered and you can search by a particular series.
Debbie's Spurts 4 years ago
Series information is top of my list (although that might be easiest once edition features added so that adding a work to the series as # whatever collects up all the other editions as # in series). Admittedly, somewhat a selfish request since I read a lot of series. I am utterly cinfused as to how to locate series and edition info here.
Lucid Reading 4 years ago
As someone looking for a GR alternative - I am glad to see you will be adding discussion forums! :)
I would also like book series being numbered and favorite quotes from books posting on the books' page. Also, different ways to search for books besides just the title, such as by author, series, etc.
I know you have a lot on your plate and so appreciate your willingness to put a "to do" list together! Some day, I would like the ability to do lists which can be shared than having to make a shelf. Being able to click on the author's name on a book's page to pull up all the author's books would be helpful as well.

You guys are awesome! My wish for BL is to be able to add text whenever I updated my progress on a book and for my friends to be able to comment on them.
The Holy Terror 4 years ago
When looking on the book page I'd like to be able to see an aggregate score of everyone's ratings. (If this has been asked for, I'm sorry, there are a lot of comments and I only skimmed!) I know it shows an image of the average star rating and the amount of reviews, but I'd like a number (like 3.58 or something.)

Probably not the biggest priority, but maybe if it's something easy to code ...

Thanks for all of the hard work you guys have put into this site, especially what you've done over the last week or so. It's fantastic to see a site that responds to questions and actually listens to suggestions. I'm having a lot of fun on here and I can't stop recommending it to my friends.

Keep the good stuff comin'!
Debbie's Spurts 4 years ago
I think an aggregate rating needs a suggested rating scale ("suggested," folks before anyone tars and feathers me, "suggested" -- not trying to prevent anyone from rating however they like or not at all, but when I emailed asking booklikes support about their suggested rating scale they just said I could rate however). My concern is that imported goodreads star ratings are from a suggested rating scale where ★★☆☆☆ = okay / ★★★☆☆ = liked where amazon and most bookseller sites have a suggested rating scale of ★★★☆☆ = okay / ★★★★☆ = liked. Not sure combining multiple systems results in a valid aggregate.

I have a question,

How do I update DNS?

Because it says: "we've changed our DNS, please update them to new ones: 137.135.170.115 to make your site work properly."
I think this has been asked but having the reviews I follow list first on a book page would be awesome. Being able to search my shelves by entering a search term would be great too.
Debbie's Spurts 4 years ago
New here so may be misunderstanding the question or not be best person to answer. But, I have been able to search my shelves two ways: (1) by clicking the bookseller logo at left of the top of menu search box/field (the logo for amazon, Barnes and Noble, whatever you are using) to get a drop-down list showing my bookshelf at top of all the bookseller links--select that and enter search term. Or (2) from main top menu, click "shelf" and over on righthand side above first shelf click "table view" and at left of blog-shelf/table-view choices a new search box appears that searches your shelf.
I would like to be able to synch to goodreads, which I can do, but I only want to synch the catalog, not the reviews.
rameau's ramblings 4 years ago
When I like a post or a review I know it shows on my blog Timeline, but it doesn't show on the feed/dashboard for everyone else (does it?). Reblogging seems the only way to push that review I want to highlight on the feed and to show it to my followers. I miss the small notification line on the Tumblr dash that says so-and-so has liked this-someone's post, little like it now shows a friend has entered a giveaway or has added a book on their shelves. That way my liking others posts wouldn't clog the feed but it would give my followers the chance to investigate further.

Also, when I look at a review through the shelves and "see review" link, I'd really like to be able to edit it too. The other option would be to switch off infinite scroll and activate pages scrolling to make it easier to find the old posts I've imported and that have lost their formatting. I have hundreds of reviews I've mostly ignored until now.
rameau's ramblings 4 years ago
P.S. Thank you for everything you've already done.
SilverThistle 4 years ago
Most of what has already been asked for is on my wishlist too, I just have a few of my own requests...

I'm finding it hard to find books from the search box. I'm looking forward to all editions being on the same page but at the moment it's frustrating trying to find a book edition that has all the reviews in one place. Also, my wish would be that in that dropdown from the search box there could be an option to search within 'booklikes'. At the moment I can search either my own shelves or lots of online marketplaces for the book I'm looking for, but I'd like to search mostly within the community here so my first choice when searching is to see what other users thought of a book.

Second wish - When I find the book I'm looking for from search, there's no way to filter out the reviews. I'd like to see the reviews/thoughts/ratings from people I follow separated from the general userbase

#3 - It's sometimes easy to miss good discussions so is it possible to include posts made by your friends to the dashboard feed? Example "silverthistle posted 'blah, blah, blah' to the 'make your wish on Booklikes' thread. Maybe with a checkbox for if you'd prefer not to have your posts shown to others. Or, even better...a checklist for if you DO want a particular post added to the dashboards of your friends.

I'm not very good at explaining my wishes but hope I make a bit of sense.

Thanks for everything so far, I love it here!

Oh, so kind of like a booklikes database. I love this idea!
Thank you for providing such a wonderful site and dedicated staff to run it.

One thing I'd like to see is automatic truncation of long posts, so that if a post is over, say, twelve lines (or however many characters), it automatically puts a "Read More" button on the bottom.

I'm new to Booklikes, and while it's an adjustment, I like it! In addition to several of my fellow commenters wishes which I agree with, I would love to have the option to customize my shelves more. And by that I mean, adding more to the current view so I don't have to flip forward page after page if I'm looking for something. Instead of the default of 20, could we have the option for more (i.e. 40, 60, 80, 100)
so we don't have to scroll through more pages if we don't want to? Because honestly, I'm lazy and would rather have everything or a substantial portion of it in one view. Thanks!

The only thing that comes to my mind would be spoiler tags. It's great that you can mark a post as not spoiler free, but I think it would be better if you could hide parts of your text with spoiler tags. Or does this already exist and I just haven't found it so far?! :)

one other thing: I noticed that I don't always get a notification when I have a new follower. Is this a problem on my side or is it because you have so many new users atm?! :)
Familiar Diversions 4 years ago
I think you can see all the posts you tagged a certain way by going to your blog (username.booklikes.com) and clicking on your post tags there.
Familiar Diversions 4 years ago
Darn. I thought I remembered that working, but I just tried it myself and it didn't. I can't even get it to work from my Blog button page.
Romancing Riley 4 years ago
Forgive me if it has already been said, but I gave up reading all the comments. However, is it possible to see other reviews on the book's page? I only see mine or people that I'm friends with. I would like to see everyone's as sometimes their opinions are the deciding factor on whether or not I read it.
I put a book on my private shelf but I noticed the review still shows up on my blog - and before you wonder why I want to keep a review private, I usually write them so remind myself what I thought of a book. :)

I also would like Groups & PM's. I also would like when I get an email on a comment made when I click on the original posting for it to go to the new comment, not the orginal posting.

I also add my thanks to the wonderful responsivness of this site to it's readers!
Spell-checking
Really? You have it in your internet browser. Install a dictionary. It's free ^^
Sadly, my work browser is antiquated and doesn't and they(work) are fanatical about not allowing staff to change anything, can't download blah, blah. It's not an issue at home where I have a browser that is at least marginally up-to-date.and (as you say) does spell check as I type.
The ability to remove date read - somehow about 10 of my to be read books have an erroneous date read and I can't see how to fix it
BookLikes 4 years ago
Sorry for this. You can change date by clicking the book, read status and then you can edit dates.
Being able to add/change the sticky shelves - "read" is not very user-friendly, I prefer to shelf by year read (makes it easier to manipulate) but I can't see a way of promoting or demoting shelves
BookLikes 4 years ago
You can create your own thematic shelves on mail Shelf page. Soon we'll also add option of exclusive shelf.
How about collapsing all posts on the dashboard? Some reviews are pretty long and I don't want to have scroll through them - if I could just see a snippet - a bit like the view when someone just marks a book as read - with a line or two as a teaser?
Archer's Asylum 4 years ago
That's already available and down to the OP. All they have to do is use the page break function.
Novel Tease 4 years ago
Well, then it isn't available. We can hardly expect bloggers to format specifically for our own preferences. Really, it shouldn't be that difficult to just let us choose how much we want to see of each post
Also I don't want a permanent header asking me to invite my FB friends or a sidebar of pictures of the books I'm currently reading - the actual dashboard only uses about 50% of the screen width for posts/reviews which is a bit of a waste of space
ibrium 4 years ago
Maybe this is a bit too persnickety, but I think it would be great if title sorting would ignore leading articles. Fop instance, "The Shining" would be in the Ss, not the Ts, or "A Clockwork Orange" in the Cs, not the As.

Just a small wish this time....Would it be possible that when I get a notification that there's a new comment on a thread I'm following = when I click the notification it takes me to that particular comment? Or maybe just takes me to a spot where the new comments start, from when I last visited the thread?
Sandi 4 years ago
That's exactly what I was asking about, but she expressed it better.
It's how I understood why youtube system, where you can sort by date posted or thread is pretty good ^^ You can get lost in the comments.

I want my friends who aren't registered on BL to be able to see my bookshelves and wishlist, at least.
Novel Tease 4 years ago
I've gone to a lot of trouble to get good book covers for my collection, so it's a shame to see so many poor quality covers attached to the ones I've imported
. And if the book is out of print, there's a large possibility that it won't get a cover at all. I'd really like to see an option to upload a cover rather than just search online stores.
Yes, making changes to the existing book pages would be nice.

I think the main thing I'd like from Booklikes right now is some level of patience from members who have been around longer than we have. I've seen some pretty snotty comments, and it's uncalled for. Everything else can be worked around; if community attitude is against us, it would be nice to at least have a way to block users.

I'm unable to edit posts in Safari on my iPad and iPhone. I'd love to be able to do that since I do a lot of posting on those devices.

And just want to throw in my support for being able to unsubscribe from the comments of posts after we comment. I have gotten so many emails from a couple of posts. It's overwhelming.
You can change what email notifications you get by going to settings, then scroll down to "email notifications" under the general tab. I have mine set to only get email newsletters, although I still got two emails today for new people following me.

The book pages are so cold. I want to be able to see my friends reviews and to be able to easily see all the shelves I have that book on! That's the best part of Goodreads to me. Seeing who has read what and what they thought. (Top Friends would be nice too . . . ) Also, to see discussions going on about that book and if groups are ever incorporated to see what groups are talking about it.
Not sure if this already has been mentioned, but I would like it if it would be possible to customize the graphic side even more - I love BookLikes, but I find that the size of the images (book covers especially) to be a bit on the large size. I would like to have the options on book covers to have sizing to choose from, such as "small", "medium" and "large". I would classify the current cover size as "large".
Dor Does Books 4 years ago
I'd like books to have a single page rather than separate book pages for Kindle/Paperback etc. I like to look up books to see what everybody else has thought of it - which is a nice way to find people to follow.

Because I'm demanding, some kind of "People who rated this also liked" box would also be nice.

But thank you for creating this site! I like what I'm seeing so far.

The information about 1) csv backup and 2) android app are EXACTLY what I wanted to hear. Thank you so much for working on those. I can be completely patient about the other stuff as long as I can eventually get the ability to backup my book info and to be able to add/update books via my phone. (The phone is pretty vital for sales because I do buy stuff at stores, sometimes I have to check my book lists for author names.)

Administrators are apparently no longer reading, or at least, no longer responding to comments on this thread. If there is a deadline for posting, they should let us know.
Ultramarine 4 years ago
I have a few suggestions :)

Book page: I would love to be able to see who of my friends read the book (not just regular list of everyone who read it), I would want to see when the book was published or when it will be published, number of pages etc.
I think it would be nice for now that we have missing data an option to add more data on the book (as I listed above) and also if it will be possible to add together the different additions of the same book. Also a link to the author's other books and a page for series.

Book shelves: I would REALLY enjoy a possibility to change manually the order of the books on my list. especially on the "planning to read" list. on GR I used to manage the list as I was planning to read it. it has special significance with series when you put them in the right order
Besides that I would love for more options to manage the list as by - number of pages, date of publishing (especially relevant for me on books that haven't been published yet)

Personal Page: Right now the books and reviews were moved to the site but the quotes didn't. maybe you can add a page or a feature in which we can copy our favorite quotes? or add a place in the relevant book for favorite quotes by people
I would LOVE an option to search my books. or through other people's books - if I'm looking for a specific review by that person.
When our reviews were copied the HTML got deleted. I'm not sure if there is an option for writing in your platform or it have something similar.

Statistics: I would love to know more than the challenge - how many books I've read - maybe even per month (not only year), how many pages I've read, how many I've rated/reviewed etc. I like this feature on GR but I'd like it even better if there could be more options than they have there.

Subscription to friends: It would be great if we can get an email notifying us of changes people we are following made the following day/week - read a book, added one, wrote a review etc.

Last but not least - an application :) I would like an android one but I'm sure apple people want one for their devices as well.

Thank you!

Book Shelves idea - YES! I am dying trying to keep my books in order. It's the main reason I'm still using GR.
Debbie's Spurts 4 years ago
I know shift-enter inserts a blank line when typing a comment/reply instead of submitting but fir the life of me I cannot figure out how to do on iPad and other tablet/cell-phone devices.
My biggest wish right now for Booklikes is a book page, that includes what other people have shelved the book as. That's what I miss the most about GR, honestly.
Debbie's Spurts 4 years ago
I wish when a review or blog post is linked to a specific book that you could click to shelve the book. Frequently I'll be scrolling thru blogs and find a book interesting.
Familiar Diversions 4 years ago
You actually can, although it takes a couple clicks. Click the book the review is linked to. Then click the "Add to Bookshelf" button. Then click "Planning to read" or whatever exclusive shelf you want.
Debbie's Spurts 4 years ago
I think that works only when poster marked post as a "review" -- otherwise licking the boo cover does nothing. At least doesn't work for me.
I see the book page now, but it does leave a bit to be desired. It only displays the "Read" and "Planning to read" shelves, which tell me next to nothing. I'd like some way to view what the book is most commonly shelved as (such as, Young Adult, Horror, etc) and I'd also like to be able to view the entire book summary without having to click a button that leads me to Amazon. If I wanted to search for books on Amazon, I would, you know? But I don't know if that's something you can change. It sure would be nice.

I second Petra's request to see all community reviews related to a book. It is one feature that really helps to explore new books and authors. I certainly have found a few gems this way.
BrokenTune 4 years ago
Thanks very much for all the new features that have been implemented already. What I would like to see in future and which I think would help users interact better with the site are (some of them are already mentioned):

- being able to see the reviews of other BookLikers when looking up books and which priotitises reviews from people I follow
- status updates connected our book review page
- easier ways to edit / search for reviews other than having to scroll through blog
- easy Spoiler tags so we don't have to mark whole reviews/updates as spoiler.
- being able to link other booksellers sites to search for copies of titles I want to read
- a tag cloud on our dash. Or some other easy way to see all our tags and click through them.
- author pages or a similar easy way to find more titles by the same author

Not sure if is a new feature, glitch, or my user error -- but, I've been working on renaming shelves and capitalization seems to sticks only if shelf name is two or more words.

For book giveaways... could you please require that the author or publisher indicate the formats available (pdf, epub or mobi) if it is an ebook, and also how it is delivered to the winner?
Hi Petra, you can make the blog as unrelated to books as you want - I did that the other day - ISBN's are not needed!!
Actually it already says "Reblogged from ....." at the far bottom of the reblogged post, but it's not visible enough. I always add [REBLOGGED] in the title to make it more obvious that it's been re-blogged!

I would like to see a form of "infinite scroll" when browsing my books. The pagination makes it cumbersome to go through the list. The option to see all the books that are stored in any given shelve in just one page would be very handy and make book-administration easier - at least for me.
.
Ultramarine 4 years ago
I agree, also I have a problem when I go from list to list. sometimes I get naked shelves or empty list. then I refresh it a few times then it's good. maybe there is some thing to be done about this bug.
ibrium 4 years ago
Add another vote for infinite scroll.
Ultramarine, the blank shelves issue you've encountered may be caused by having one of the default shelves selected, then clicking on another shelf. It's been my experience that this is the cause, anyway.
The system doesn't move from shelf to shelf when one of the original defaults is selected, it seems to use the second click as a limiter for the first shelf. For example, if I have both "Planning to Read" (original) and "Put Aside" (exclusive) shelves highlighted, I get blank shelves. If you click "off" the default shelf (or select "All"), you should see the books you're looking for. To me this limiting seems a redundant feature, but perhaps I'm simply not seeing the potential.
Ultramarine 4 years ago
I think I get it! :) 10x!
Indeed! I do agree - it should be more obvious who's the original poster (but it's also nice to see who is reposting it on your own dashboard) :)
So you mean that you would like to see more classifications for blog posts? That might be handy, I agree. Right now only option is "review" or "all posts".
OstensiblyA 4 years ago
There have been a few times I haven't been able to trace posts back to the original poster and then I give up and don't reblog. Honestly, I really hate the reblogging system.
Trillian 4 years ago
just a short info: you can already search books by isbn/asin. I do this all the time :)
Debbie's Spurts 4 years ago
In the meantime, when you do cycle down thru and find the original poster, add that link to the "source" field over at right before reblogging. On your own posts, you can add a source from the start (when you hit "preview" that preview pages url is a good source long if you remove "?preview" from the end of the link.

The reblog thing bothers me too, especially since I don't want to take credit - and I'd like to send people to comment on the original. Currently I put my name next to my comment at the top, then a divider, and then the reblog - but that seems like a bit too much work - so I'd love it if the reblog system were to format this for me somehow.

Regarding notifications on comments? Can you make them more selective? Like if we want to only be notified for comments to our blog, or something, but make it that we are not notified for EVERY comment made to a particular post? I had to disable all comment notifications after posting to this thread b/c my email blew up. ;) I'm sure it's probably been mentioned, but I gave up reading 200+ comments.

Regarding infinite scroll? Please make it an option and not a mandatory feature. It hates my crappy DSL. ;) Thank you for all your hard work and the willingness to listen to your users.

I would love an option to edit my reviews on the blog page. or an easier way to search and edit out posts. when the post is quite old it's not very convenient to search and change it.
You can edit review: when you are in your DASHBOARD you "find" (within quotation marks as it's not always as easy as it sounds), and hoover your mouse pointer on the upper right corner of the post. An edit button should appear.

that's exactly it, it's not very comfortable this way.. maybe a better option on the dashboard for searching like a box we can check that will only show our reviews/posts

I may have missed it in all the above commentary -- but, a sort by title would be great. I'm trying to pull my reviews over here alphabetically and all the "A whatever" titled books when I sort by title are a really big pain. I'll be psychic and suspect all the "The whatever" titles will be equally frustrating when I work my way up to the T books.
Coffee2words 4 years ago
In shelf view you can sort by title, you have also got sub-sorting options. Make sure the correct shelf is selected and the correct exclusive shelf. Then at the top of the shelf view you have Sort By: Title, add date, read date, Author, title and rating. Click on the relevant one and you can sort ascending or descending.
Coffee2words 4 years ago
Having said that, yes all the 'A whatever's and 'the whatevers' are sorted by A and T, annoying!
AH@BadassBookReviews 4 years ago
I'm sure that this has been mentioned above, but when I get a notification that someone has commented on "post", I don't know which "post" and if there are a lot of comments, I need to wade through and find the new comment. This is time consuming, so I don't bother. Is there a way for comment notifications to take you to the newest comments?

Purr More Bark Less 4 years ago
Another request for the giveaways: could you please add another drop down filter to allow sorting of giveaways by start date, end date, genre/category, or number of copies offered? Right now it seems to be sorting in random order (or some order I cannot figure out). It is not such a big deal now because there aren't that many, but it will become increasingly frustrating as the number of giveaways grow. Also, I do find it a bit disturbing that the author/publisher can choose to select their own winners. To ensure fairness, the giveaway creator should not have any say in who the winner is.
Purr More Bark Less 4 years ago
okay, I think I just figured out that it is sorted by ending date, but would still prefer a choice so I can filter by start date, genre of # of copies.

Can I also add to this if the giveaway posting could have a countdown timer to when it will close. That's totally useful for us international peeps.
Purr More Bark Less 4 years ago
Please add a :Jump to: field wherever there are pages, such as shelf, import page, etc. so a user can quickly "jump" to any page instead of clicking umpteen times to work up to a specific page Only a few extra pages will show every time you click. For example, my import page has 41 pages so it looks like 1, 2, 3 ... 38, 39, 41. It takes about 5 clicks (and a scroll down each time since I'm bumped up to the top of the page each time) just to get to page 13. My only workaround is to manually alter the page number in the URL.

In addition to the items listed in the blog post, here are some additional wishes: 1) to be able to comment on books recently shelved or currently being read by friends; 2) a better explanation of what a friend is -- rather than following or follower; 3) to be able to post status updates as to books; 4) to be able to easily search all of my friends/followers reviews for a book; 5) in sum -- to create the site to be more interactive between its members. As it is right now, it is more a collection of individual blogs but I believe what I am looking for and the complaints I hear about BL is that it isn't a true forum or interactive site -- the members want to be able to discuss books while they are being read and shelved and they want to look for books and see the reviews site wide -- rather than only seeing reviews as they are posted by those they are following. Thanks!

I would like to add my vote to the requests for a better way to reblog. The original post being reblogged needs to be more obvious and I would really be best if it were a link back so that comments stay with the original post.
AH@BadassBookReviews 4 years ago
Re Reblogging: I think that BL should come up with a way for people to ask permission to reblog - ie perhaps when the initial post is posted a check box that says may or may not be reblogged? As a newbie to the site, I find it difficult to backtrack to the original post (I always seem to lose it). I wish there was a way to store favorites of blog posts so I could access them easily.
I'd love to be able to edit or delete posts through the timeline. Editing through the blog is tedious and I have to keep scrolling, as it doesn't hold my place.

There's a difference between reposting that links back to the original post and basically lifting someone's entire post. Just because I put a review up here doesn't mean I want someone taking it wholesale and all of the comments and likes getting spread everywhere instead of on my original post. Sharing is great, but there's a better way of doing it.
Debbie's Spurts 4 years ago
I don't think reviews should have a reblog option like everything else in the dashboard/blog feeds. I'm sure booklikes is working on lots of review editing, consolidating, etc. stuff. But when members reblog a review it looks like it's their own review of a book until (or if) you notice the little "reblogged" note at bottom. Members can always link to the review, cite if quoting, post it as a url, etc. But not just hit reblog and out it goes looking like it was your own review.
