Great review -- and you're right of course. The whole "Steinbeck Country" thing, and books like "Cannery Row" and "The Grapes of Wrath", tend to color our view of him as a writer. Which reminds me that I really should get around at some point to reading "The Moon Is Down" and his Russian travel diary ...

Thank you. I haven't gotten around to The Moon Is Down yet. It's one of the few I have left, along with Cup of Gold, ...Pippin IV, and Working Days. It's sort of sad to see the end of my journey with Steinbeck approaching. It has been a wonderful journey though.
I'll believe that sight unseen. I've read most of the Salinas novels and some of his nonfiction, but as indicated, have yet to get to the things not set in his (widely-conceived) "core" world.
