I liked the way you worded it; I really loved the first parts of the books and the characters and even understood all the last bits -- but they were heavy-handed in the end. I read some of his other future histories and Martian books first, which may have colored my views of this book.

At least, that's how I felt when first reading (on re-reads I tend to skim over some last bits; not just the preachy bits but also some carnival bits -- but, I think that's partly just for being dated since I'm not living in running off to join traveling circus/carnivals or hopping freight trains times).

Eerily, some of the last bits have sent shivers up my spine even recently with real life things seeming awfully close to what Heinlein describes in terms of things like mega-churches.

That is, I know there weren't hobos hopping freight trains in this book -- just that parts reminded me of that time period.
