Ooooooh!!! More vintage architectural porn. :P Those tiles are beautiful and that symbol was a widely used religious icon across many cultures long before the Nazis adopted it. I've got a couple of antique post cards dating from before the 1st World War that feature the swastika as a good luck symbol. And you can't go wrong with a cup of hot chocolate. Your version sounds yummy. I'm actually too lazy to go to all that work myself, but I enjoyed the pics. A Burnable Book is the prefect final touch too. :)

I was a little concerned when we first bought the house and my brother pointed it out to me (because, hand to god, I did not even notice), but oddly enough, I remembered an old X-Files episode where an old grandmother (Hungarian maybe?) used it as a symbol of protection and I did a bit of research to verify it. Now I'm actually very happy they're there and wouldn't give them up. I like the symbology of protection and good luck. :)

The hot choc. doesn't actually take me any more time that it takes for the steamer thingie to heat the milk up, although there are times when I just wish I had a packet handy. :D

It's a religious symbol associated with Buddhism and Hinduism; I've seen it in several the temples I've visited before, mainly associated with Buddha himself. As POI, and your research indicates, it's a symbol for good luck and protection. It's unfortunate that it ended up becoming widely associated with the Nazis, despite having already been in existence long before Hitler blemished it's meaning.

Ooh! So much pretty! I love that fireplace! Echoing POI, those tiles are so gorgeous. And cinnamon honey sounds like all sorts of yum.

Thanks! It IS all sorts of yum. This is a 'creamed' honey - which just means they aerate it - and the cinnamon blended with it. If you see a version, I highly recommend it! It's so good I buy it in 1kg tubs. :D
Such a beautiful fireplace!! *And* it's got books on top, too (I'm guessing the ones on the left are MT's, but I think I'm also spotting a few vintage hardcovers on the right)?

And you know what, it took me two looks to recognize that thing as a swastika, too, because its arms are closer together than in the actual Nazi symbol, so all I saw at first was the kind of intertwined square-based design that you find a lot in ancient Greek art. But anyway, yes, as PoI and Ani said, that symbol is one of the many things hijacked and put to a use by the Nazis that has nothing whatsoever to do with its original meaning.

And is that a stylized Tudor rose in the cast-iron lateral plate above the actual kindling area?

Hmm. I do have some white chocolate sitting around somewhere in my kitchen. Now I'm inspired ...

Thank you - and yes, the ones on the left are MT's TBR; friends know when friends don't read Baldacci, lol. The ones on the right are my overflow classics: those extra editions of Austen and Doyle that I cannot seem to stop myself from owning. :D

And of course, I had to go back and look, because you can imagine if I didn't notice the swastikas until someone pointed them out, I REALLY didn't see the rose, but yes, there do seem to be Tudor roses in the cast iron surround! :)

White hot chocolate? You intrigue me!
Vintage ACD and Austen editions? Swoon ...

The white hot chocolate is a gift from the friend with whom I visited London in June; it's from a store named Whittards (actually, a chain specializing in tea and related things -- coffee and hot chocolate are a more recent addition to their product portfolio). While I browse their tea and tea accessories -- and their mugs; they have the cutest mug and bone china series ever -- my friend tends to wander off to other parts of the store ... and before I knew it, back in June she'd gotten me this! And the weather outside is beginning to look just perfect for this sort of stuff ...
I love your picture arrangement!

My flower pot and cake-stand? :) That was MT's creative genius at work - I was just going to flip a trashcan over, lol.
Yes! It looks really nice!

I'll tell him - he'll be pleased. :)

I was going to mention that, too! especially the color combination with your blue cup and the tiles behind. That fireplace is absolutely gorgeous, and I've never seen one that was designed for burning coal instead of wood. Do you ever use it?
