Cool. I read Molecule Hunt a loooong time ago. It would be interesting to see what the new stuff is.

:-( Not available on Audible.

This could be interesting... I'll need to see if the library has it.
BrokenTune 2 weeks ago
No,... They only have The Molecule Hunt. :(

My library has neither edition, and I'm not sure this is something I want to buy. :

I hear you. :(

You can borrow the Molecule Hunt. It's an old version of this book. The new edition has the same text just with an addendum at the end of each chapter (apparently).
Tannat 2 weeks ago
Yes, this appears the case. Although apparently some of the addenda flat-out contradict the original chapters.

Haven't read the new edition. It would be interesting to see the contradictions. Sometimes science is like that - the new discoveries prove the old ones wrong or more evidence means a different interpretation. Unless the author doesn't know what he is writing about - then I'm going to be very annoyed.

The differences might be interesting if you're really into the topic. For the purposes of the proposed group read, I'm going to pass. I have no intention reading the previous version when I already know this is no longer factually reliable ... and not having that much interest in DNA etc. I won't know which parts have been updated. So, erm, nah... I'm good watching this one from the side-lines.

The ebook is available through my library. I'm definitely interested in the topic but the Amazon reviews are mixed; most said it was technical and dense. Hmm... depends on whether my brain is on vacation when September rolls around :P

Molecule Hunt wasn't technical or dense. I think some people freak out when they see "DNA" in a book.
Tannat 2 weeks ago
lol. That's like saying, "Oh no, he said *math*!"

Yip. One book I read, the author spend about half a page telling the readers that his publisher told him to delete any equations because book sales decrease by the number of equations in a book. So he spent 7 pages trying to explain something that can be said in a basic equation with only 4 variables, one of them an "=" sign. :/
Tannat 2 weeks ago
Well, equations summarize; they don't exactly explain.

That's why you add diagrams and sketches instead of a wall of text only.

If so many people can't get hold of the book, maybe vote for another book?
Murder by Death 2 weeks ago
I was thinking of offering this as an option, but thought I'd wait a little bit to see if we got any further feedback.

Is the voting list for September still up? Maybe give people another week to either nominate something else, vote for something else or just vote for this book again???
Murder by Death 2 weeks ago
Yes - I haven't gotten rid of it.
