Nice review. I hope your exorcism is relatively painless (I've heard things....). I can't say I've found books called "literary" all that entertaining or original.

I usually stay as far from the literary tag as possible - and I double down on books with stickers bragging about prizes, but everything I'd heard about this one didn't sound like a "literary" book. It's written in a weird and clever format - the mashup between fact and fiction - but it didn't beat me on the head with its "art". It was just good. Thank goodness. :)

Great review! I've heard a lot about this one and have wondered about it. But the "literary" tag put me off and, while you do make it sound interesting, I think the alternative story structure is likely to annoy me.

I read this on audio. Each character had a different voice, so it was like listening to a play. I chose the audio because the structure looked off putting. The audio was brillant.
Portable Magic 2 weeks ago
Really? That's good to know. Usually audio doesn't work at all for books with alternative story structures, because they're hard to follow. Now I'm intrigued. I'll look to see if my library carries it on overdrive.
Portable Magic 2 weeks ago
Yep, my library has it on audio. Apparently it won the Audie award this year, too.

Just so you know, it seems that readers of this book fall into two camps - ones who loved the audio but can't deal with the written form - and ones who hated the audio but tried the written book and loved it.
Portable Magic 2 weeks ago
Yeah, I'm not too sure which camp I'll fall into. But I've heard enough to overcome my reservations and give it a try.

I'm thankful for the original review and your comments, Chris. I might try this out on audio.

Let me say, (and I should have said this in the review itself - I meant to - but I forgot), that the formatting of the text is the book is NOT conducive to readers "getting it". While it does read a bit like a play minus stage directions, the 'speaker' is listed at the bottom of their bit of dialogue, which felt backwards to me. I spent the first 5 minutes with the book flipping pages back and forth muttering 'wtf? who's talking?'. After I sorted that out, it all clicked and flowed well.

Also, I can imagine this would be brilliant on audio with a cast, but just a heads up that some sections would NOT be suitable for work, or for anyone slightly squeamish about hearing sexual acts (most of them raw) verbalised.

@PM: The weird story structure did piss me off for the first 5 minutes. Once I figured out the structure, it actually flowed really well. The historical quotes made for a nice breather in the narrative, and became their own narrative too, one that contributes to the context of the fictional one.

It's a great story. I doubt it had as profound an effect on me as it was intended to, but it was good.

The type of "literary" novels that piss me off are the ones that are all character and no story, or the ones that are all style and no story. The latter include bizarre structures or storytelling devices that are so proud of themselves that I'm paying more attention to that than to the story.

It sounds like this might be one of the latter, but the different actors for the different voices on audio will probably help that, and at least I'm forewarned. I won't be in a huge hurry to get to this one, but when I do, I'll let you know what I think!

Either way, thanks for this review and the warnings, it was super interesting and has given me a new book to try.
Murder by Death 2 weeks ago
I'd say it's closer to the latter, but the story is stronger than the weird structure device. Definitely strong on story.

If/when you get to it, I hope you like it. :)

The other part of the reason I went with the audio was Don Cheadle.

I've been side-eyeing this one because of the resemblance to The Graveyard Book, but that prize sticker was putting me off. Perhaps I'll give it a whirl after all. I have better luck with Man Booker nominees than Pulitzer winners, so there's that too.

Borrow it from the library! I read it earlier this year and although I'm not sorry I did, it wasn't worth spending money on or storing or dusting.

If your local has it DP, definitely give it a peak and see if it catches your attention. We can always play postal library if you'd like too - I'll not be re-reading it anytime soon, and I'd be happy to pop it in a mailer over to you if you'd like to read it. I trust my BookLikes friends implicitly when it comes to lending books. :D

My local has it, but it's really, really nice to know I have the BEST BOOKISH FRIENDS E-V-E-R. ♥

Let me know who your exorcist is if they're good. I seem to suffer this kind of possession from time to time too. ;)

Currently I'm trying one called A Murder for the Books by Victoria Gilbert; I figure what better exorcist of literary possession than a cozy mystery? ;-)

Perfect!

Huh. This sounds interesting. I like the comparison to NG.

There's definitely a similar vibe (no vampires though), very grown up. Had I read it not knowing about the prize, I'd never have pegged it as "that" kind of book; just a really well written story, but like Wanda suggests - try it from the library first, if you're tempted. I'm not sorry I bought it, but I'm also not sorry I didn't splurge on the hardcover and I'm pleased to have gotten it on sale for $12 bucks. :)

I'm kinda trying the library first for everything these days. Mt. TBR....you know. Let's not talk about Mt. TBR. At least not until the end of the month.

I'm sure they have a copy, too. They are quite good about the latest prize winners. :)

For those still on the fence, have a print/digital copy handy if you are listening to the audio. It helps a lot since the style of the writing is so unusual.

Good advice, thank you!
