Thank you for this review. I sent the audiobook of the first in the series back to audible because it came across as so slick. Since then, I've seen lots of positive reviews for books in the series. Your comments about how the series progresses makes me think I might go back to the first book and listen again.
You're welcome. I listened to the first book on audio too, and had more problems with it than I did with the printed edition. It's odd because I really like Lorelei King's other audio work, but here, it just really didn't work for me. Story wise, the ... let's call it maturity ... of the books develops a lot as they progress. A definite curve upward. There's still snark and silliness, (and up front: some explicit sex scenes), but the mythology and the characters kept me interested, and some of the investigations she undertakes are dark, which is probably why I appreciated the silliness as much as I did.
If you go another round with the series, I hope you find it more enjoyable than you did the first time.
