I've not read von Arnim, but have always been curious about her writing. How is The Enchanted April?
Lillelara 8 months ago
I will be reading the first couple of pages in about 20 minutes, as soon as I´m snuggled up in my bed ;). So I can´t tell you just yet. But I have read "Vera" by von Arnim and I know that I like her writing style (the book in itself is depressing like hell). So I have high hopes for "The Enchanted April".
BrokenTune 8 months ago
Ah, I believe I have Vera on the kindle because of your review of it.
Lillelara 8 months ago
I liked "Vera", but it is a gut punch of a novel and I guess it may be not her best book to start with. I´m denifitely looking forward to The Enchanted April because of its lighter content.

How exactly are we supposed to know that the book had a twist before we read it...?
BrokenTune 8 months ago
Yeah, some of the task take a bit of knowledge about plot points. Sometimes the blurb will tell you about it but mostly I rely on the confirmation by other people who may have read it.
Lillelara 8 months ago
Actually this says the blurb of the book: Career of Evil is a fiendishly clever mystery with unexpected twists around every corner.
Apparently this is the perfect book for this square.

Fair enough. :)
Hol 8 months ago
@Tannat Glad you asked that. I was wondering, too/
BrokenTune 8 months ago
Ooh, also doubles. :)
Lillelara 8 months ago
Oh my, I didn´t see that. Thank you, BT.

You know what - I didn't create a task for the "start" space after beginning the game! You're the first person to land there, so here you go:

The START space is a free space! Read any book you want to read!

That sounds like a fabulous task! =D

I've been trying to work out why Lillelara got a double roll. Could anyone tell me, please?
She rolled doubles (a double 4) on the previous roll.
Lillelara 8 months ago
Sorry, Hol. My post is all over the place :).
Hol 8 months ago
Just realised that! Thanks. I have to go over monopol rules!
Hol 8 months ago
It's just because of rolling a double 4, isn't it? *slaps head*
Char's Horror Corner 8 months ago
You got it!

Eventually!!
BrokenTune 7 months ago
Yup. Chimneys includes a shooting.
Lillelara 7 months ago
Great! Thanks for the confirmation. Another book that I can knock of my Christie TBR :)
BrokenTune 7 months ago
I will be curious what you make of this one.
Moonlight Reader 7 months ago
Nobody likes it but me! Fingers crossed that Lillelara joins me in the Inspector Battle love fest.
BrokenTune 7 months ago
LoL. I wasn't going to say anything. ;)
No, I like it as well.
Lillelara 7 months ago
I hope I will be participating in the love fest ;D. I will keep you updated as soon as I´m reading the book. Unfortunately I don´t have my physical copy with me at the moment, so I will be starting my Chimneys read tomorrow.
BrokenTune 7 months ago
Yup, there is a talking cat in TMAM. Also, did you like Faust? (You'll find out why I asked...)
Lillelara 7 months ago
Große Bildungslücke ... ich habe den Faust nie gelesen. My German teacher had the most unconventional reading taste. Unfortunately we didn´t read any of the usual literary canon. I just have to wait and see how I manage without this background.
BrokenTune 7 months ago
Ah,... Oh, well. It might work better without the Faust connection. Enjoy!

I didn't realise you were reading The Power. I am, too. I'm going to a feminist book club next week and it's the current read. It's very much a story driven novel. I'm usually one for character driven, however, I am enjoying it. What did you think? Enjoy your bank holiday weekend, by the way.
Lillelara 7 months ago
It´s a great read for a feminist book club. There is a lot to discuss :).
I feel conflicted about the book. The plot is engaging enough, but I really disliked the characters and I just thought the story didn´t go anywhere towards the end. But then I liked the reversal of the gender roles and the framed narrative elevated this book to a solid three star read for me. But overall I felt "meh" about this book.
Hol 7 months ago
Yeah I'm feeling a bit meh about it myself, although it did just take a more exciting turn after the halfway mark.I get the impression though that not much happens after this. We'll see. You reviewing it?
Lillelara 7 months ago
Yes, I will be catching up on all my reviews over the weekend.
BrokenTune 7 months ago
Great new book choices. Looking forward to your updates. :)

So, The Lincoln in the Bardo was good?
Lillelara 6 months ago
I liked it (actually quite a lot), but it is a book that I won´t recommend to other people. I don´t know how to explain it, but it is a book that should be read because you yourself have choosen to read it. If you know what I mean ;).
BrokenTune 6 months ago
Yes. It is a book that finds you when you are ready.
Lillelara 6 months ago
Exactly :).

I have See What I Have Done on my Kindle! I got an e-ARC of it, (it's not out here until August), but haven't read it just yet. I thought it looked pretty good-I'm interested in hearing what you think of it.
Lillelara 6 months ago
I´m in the middle of the fourth chapter and the characters are creeping me out ;)
