The molasses flood and the absence of free speech (as well as Spanish Flu, the Boston Riots, everyday racism and whatever else made life unpleasant in the post-WWI world) comes up in Dennis Lehane's "The Given Day", which I just finished a few days ago. Excellently written, but it's a brick and anything *but* comfort reading.
Hmmm...I will look into that. Sounds like it may be a good audiobook. I like audiobooks for heavier reads.
The audio is blow-out-of-the-ballpark fabulous. I'd liked Michael Boatman's narration before, but this book zipped him straight onto my "you can read me the phone book" list of narrators.
