Bevan was a spoken of as a folk hero when I was growing up. The firebrand who made everything happen. It was only as I looked at things for myself that it seemed to me that Attlee was the real architect of modern Britain, with Bevan providing the theatrics.
Do you mean Ernest Bevin, or Nye Bevan? From your description it sounds more like the latter.
Adonis's biography is indeed the new one to which I was referring. I have his first book about the House of Lords after the Third Reform Act, but I've never had the occasion to read it. I'm sure his new book is just fine (it's certainly getting decent reviews), but I just can't read it while I have Bullock's volumes awaiting me, especially as they're likely to be superior in every important respect.
