I'm glad you enjoyed The Monk. I've been dithering whether to pick this one up. The length of the book has put me off so far, but it sounds like it is a gripping read and the length may not actually mean that it drags?

The version I read has 332 pages which isn't really that long. The first few chapters feel rather slow and dull I have to admit but once I got past those I thought it was quite gripping. It is of course written in the style of the times but I do love that style. I think that if you like 18th - 19th century classics and you would like to read something much stronger than Jane Austen you should certainly try the monk.

Really? For some reason the edition I looked up some time ago seemed to have 700+ pages! If it really is in the 300 hundred range, that changes thing.

I have the Oxford World's Classics edition and the actual story is 339 (not 332, don't know where I got that from) pages with additional explanatory notes and other info around it. Maybe the edition you looked at had more notes? I'd be interested to know your thoughts about it if you read it.
