I think Mystery In The Channel is much more involving--and much more fun--than Hog's Back, so good luck with that one. can't wait to see how it goes.
That one is fairly high on my TBR as well.

I wanted to read Inspector French and the Sea Mystery, but I wasn't able to get my hands on a copy. It looks like there might be a used copy available on amazon, but it's pretty expensive for a used book. I'll keep looking, though!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inspector-French-Sea-Mystery/dp/0008190674/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1522944251&sr=8-1&keywords=inspector+french+sea+mystery&dpID=51LYcjORV9L&preST=_SY291_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srch

It's new on Amazon.co.uk. You'd have to pay shipping and might not get here in time for a BR or group, but if you're just looking for it for yourself...

Ever read "The Eight" by Katherine Neville? It's a historical mystery supernatural (sort of) novel - the only historical fiction book I've ever kept. The novel has a sequel written decades after the first book, but there isn't a cliff-hanger and I can't comment on the second book since I haven't read it.
