Imagine if all authors were held to the "Not as good as 'Roger Ackroyd'" test? But I know exactly what you mean.

I hear you on expectations going into a book (tho mine aren't linked to Roger Ackroyd with Christie, more like Five Little Pigs & Murder on the Orient Express...) but it is also still remarkable that the this isn't just a standard to measure other books by the same author by but that this has become a benchmark for other books, not necessarily in the same genre even. What I'm trying to say is, even an average and enjoyable Christie is so much better than many other books.
