Woohoo! This is perfect -- I'm about to start a new book tonight anyway!

Btw, how do we translate audio book length into page length? Go with whatever major sellers (Amazon etc.) present as the current "main" / "default" print editions? Or do you want to set a minimum audio book length?
Abandoned by user 3 years ago
Anything that has a published edition that is more than 200 pages works for me. I think, alternatively, anything that is 5 1/2 hours or longer would be at least 200 pages.
Cool, thank you!

I literally looked at all of the Agatha Christie audiobooks, saw that they were between 6 & 7 hours long, determined that her books are typically 250 pages or so, and extrapolated from there.

Yet another way in which the Queen enhances lives. ;)
Yes! (And would it surprise you I used the same measure in picking my first book -- even if I ended up not starting with Dame Agatha but to save her for later?)

So, I roll the dice, move the spaces, and then read according to the number of the space that I land on? Is my first book my own choice, or do I need to read something by a woman author? Just want to be sure that I grok what is going on....
BrokenTune 3 years ago
Yup, I'd like some clarity on this, too, please.

If we all start on 1, do we all read the book for Sq. 1 before the first roll? Or do we ignore the book task for Sq. 1 at the start of the game, roll the dice, and read the book of the square we land on as the first book?
Abandoned by user 3 years ago
Read a book for square before you roll the first time.
BrokenTune 3 years ago
Fab, thank you.
Abandoned by user 3 years ago
I didn't really answer your question, Wanda. You read a book for square one before you roll. Whether you get to roll one dice or two depends on the book you read. Any book over 200 pages gets you the roll of one dice. If you read a book by a woman author, you get to roll two dice, which moves things along more quickly.

This is so that if it's a category that the reader just can't find anything to fill, players can just read a book and move on with the roll of a single dice and they don't get bogged down forever.

Does that answer your question?

Yes it does! Thank you and I'm already under way!
@BT are you playing? I didn't add you because I couldn't tell.
BrokenTune 3 years ago
OB, I'm dithering. Might sit this one out and cheer from the sidelines. Please leave me out for now.
@BT no worries!

I'd be up for it. Are the snakes and ladders part of it in any way, or is the spot you're on determined by your roll and the snakes and ladders are just decoration?
Oh, excellent question!
Abandoned by user 3 years ago
I am changing the rules a tiny bit - you need to read the book for the ladders square in order to go up the ladder. For the snake squares, no book is necessary to go backwards to the bottom of the snake.
Familiar Diversions 3 years ago
Also: you could publish a book of bookish games, and I would totally buy it. :-)
Totally.

Hahahaha.
So for the first ladder, I'd need to read #3 and #51 before I rolled again?
Abandoned by user 3 years ago
Whiskey - yes. If you land on a ladder square, you read a book for that square. If the square you land on is #3, then you can read a book published in the twentieth century, or, alternatively, you can read any book at all. Since you don't really get any benefit from the one vs. two dice roll at the bottom of a ladder, the assigned category for those squares is just for fun.

You then climb the ladder to square #51. For square number 51, you can either read a book with a wild animal on the cover and roll a two dice roll, or you can read any book and roll a one dice roll.
Got it, thanks!
Sounds like fun! I have a few books on my plate right now, but as soon as I need another one I'll definitely be using this to choose!
Abandoned by user 3 years ago
You can technically use any book to advance on the board - you just roll one dice instead of two to move forward.

I never did quite get my head around Book-opoly, but I think I can follow this!

Does this start right now? I have a Netgalley book I haven't started yet over 200 pages and written by a woman.
Abandoned by user 3 years ago
RIGHT NOW. GO! :)
Woot!
I'm excited for everyone else, but I'm prioritizing my own books, mostly comics, mostly written by men, so I won't be joining.

Good luck to everyone playing!

Gonna try! Looking for my loaded dice as we speak.

Just a question: I'm about 1/3 way through a book written by a woman. Can I use this book for square 1 or do I have to start another book from scratch?
I am. I finished the book after the game was announced--and read at least 5 hours of it in that time--so it is my book number one.
Familiar Diversions 3 years ago
Then I may use Neanderthal Seeks Human as my first one. I'm still only 37 pages into it and it's 319 pages total.
Lillelara 3 years ago
Of course I´m in :). Love your bookish games.
Tannat 3 years ago
How does this work if I'm used to reading multiple books at once? Once the game starts, can I count any books that I've read/am reading for a square and only advance once an appropriate one is finished or am I limited to only reading one book at a time?
Abandoned by user 3 years ago
I've just posted a Q & A, which hopefully answers all of the new questions scattered over the feed! If I missed any questions, post here or on the Q & A. I'll keep checking in!

How long does the game last? Until someone gets to the 100 square?
Abandoned by user 3 years ago
The first person to hit 100 is the big winner, but the game will last as long as it takes for the last person to reach 100 or die trying. ;)
@MR I kind of want to hit every square.
Tannat 3 years ago
Just keep circling around?
@tannat yes because I am weird LOL
Familiar Diversions 3 years ago
Now I'm imagining you trying to get just one last square, 10 years later, in a game of Snakes and Ladders that threatens to never end. Lol.
Tannat 3 years ago
After she hits every square, she'll still need to get to square 100 :D
You guys act like I wouldn’t do that LOL!

Will add tomorrow! I’m on my cell and the link is getting weird.
Thank you so much! Excited!

So, I landed on square #6 and I just finished a book with the Silver in the title, so now I go up the ladder to #27 and try to read a book set in WWI or WWII? Then I roll one or two dice depending on whether the book fits or not?

Exactly - sorry I missed this!

I don't think you are -- and welcome back!! It's good to see you again!

That's great, I was going to play by myself on the sidelines if I was too late anyway :D

And thanks, it's good to be back and I'm hoping I find my way round again soon.

I´m sitting this one out as well, because I´m a total mood reader at the moment and it will probably take me forever to finish the game up.
But I´m certainly looking forward to all your posts. Have fun, everybody :)

So...when does game play start???
I think it's fair to say at this point that the game has started -- the first couple of people have already posted their "completed first book and rolled the dice to move on the board" posts.

Yeah, I noticed that OB posted just after I put this question up.

I did really well with this one before, but I think I'll sit out this round. I'm in mid-account change and trying to read books from my A-list without bogging myself down with a lot of Netgalley books to distract me again.
