Good review; this sounds like a series I’d probably like. I’ve had it on my TBR list for a while, but I haven’t seen too many people talk about it.

The first book was on sale recently, so I went ahead and grabbed it, but I’m holding off on reading it until at least August. :)

Thanks! The first book did win the Hugo. I actually bought the first book when it was on sale too, because it went on sale just as I got the second book from the library and figured refreshing my memory would help (I didn't reread the whole thing but I did scan over several of the later chapters). I think it's supposed to be a trilogy, so you should be good in August or just before.

I know a bunch of people who are planning on reading it, but not too many have actually gotten around to it. I almost bought it when it came out but ended up waiting on the library. I started on Jemisin's Inheritance trilogy as well but didn't bother finishing it.

I hope you like it when you get around to it.

I haven’t read anything by Jemisin yet, so I look forward to giving her books a try. It sounds like you didn’t care much for the Inheritance trilogy? Or just lost interest by the time the next book was out?

For the Inheritance trilogy, I liked the first book more than I expected based on the description (3 stars) but I didn't think it was nearly as good as The Fifth Season (4 stars). I tried reading the second book within a month (I wasn't reading them when they first came out) and finished it but it was a struggle (1.5 stars). I just lost interest in what was happening throughout the second book, so I didn't bother with the third. It might have been better, but I figured there were better books out there.

So I'd start with The Fifth Season, personally.
