I'd say A Wizard of Earthsea is well-known. It's the big Le Guin fantasy.

I guess it just wasn't well known by me then! :)

Well, I haven't read it, but I knew about it. I've mostly stuck to Le Guin's sci fi.
It's very good, and its sequel, The Tombs of Atuan, is very different, but just as good. (Possibly better.)

Not as much a fan of the later books.

Thanks for the advice, Susanna. You've always steered me straight.
I agree. I think The Tombs of Atuan is a better book. The trilogy (as it was then) was required reading at my school. Perhaps it's a UK thing, but I always assumed it was very well known. Friends who are teachers tell me it is still on most schools' reading lists.
It was very popular when I was an adolescent, here in the US. The whole trilogy (as it was then).

Well, perhaps its just here in Canada where it needs to be better known! Or maybe I just wasn't paying attention as a kid!

Who actually pays attention when they're a kid?

Not me, I can guarantee that!
