Yes, a must read indeed. And the Berlin I grew up with ... all the way to when the Wall came down -- I had actually moved back to Berlin just a year earlier. The way Le Carré describes what the Wall meant while it existed is totally on point. I was scared sh*tless every time I had to cross, however much I knew they weren't in the least interested in me (or anyone I was traveling with) -- and, of course, at least I actually *was* able to cross. Those living on the other side weren't, and Le Carré's description of what happened if they tried is probably still somewhat on the charitable side.
