My personal recommendation would be to NOT learn more about Yellowstone's super volcano. It's fascinating, but also sorta horrifying in that "if it blows we're totally screwed no matter what we do" kinda way. :O
I remember seeing a projection map of the explosion and thinking I -might- just be ok in SW Florida. Except for the part where SW Florida is being swallowed up by the ocean and the gulf of course. :P
While I was reading, I had to stop myself from looking up everything I could about it. I've heard some things about it but don't know a lot. It sounds like what the author incorporated into the story might be accurate by what Murder by Death is alluding to. People in a hundred mile radius dead instantly while most in U.S. dead from ash in hours to weeks going by wind and rain. Would definitely affect the whole world.
On good note, only should happen once in 500,000 yrs but in story, said 40,000 yrs overdue. Who had Super-volcano in their end of the world office pull? :)
I believe we'd have a serious ash problem from it here.
I live in South Carolina.

If anyone is interested, this is a great article from Smithsonian magazine:
