I really liked the mystery/horror in this one and really disliked the romance. But then, I'm of the opinion that mixing romance and horror genres is like topping mac-n-cheese with ice cream, so I'm probably not the best audience for it.
Romance and actual horror (not thriller or suspense) probably works less than more often for me, both need focus, depth, and time to flush out. I love mac-n-cheese and ice cream so much that I'm trying to envision a scenario where the two could possibly work out.

Wonderful review! This sounds like a great read.
It was a fantastic Halloween read, my favorite so far.

I think pretty much all the books she's written hold up equally well; I really love her writing.
A lot of my friends keep saying the same thing, I'm definitely going to be on the lookout for more of her books now.

Her latest one (The Broken Girls) while still being a ghost story, is a departure in terms of story structure; much more murder mystery, with alternating time lines, and less romance. I didn't think I was going to like it but ended up loving it. "An Inquiry Into Love and Death" was my favorite of the bunch though - that one scared the key-rap out of me. :D
I had added Broken Girls because it sounded good but I'll add Inquiry too. I enjoy having the key-rap scared out of me :)

Pretty sure I own this......might be a sign I have too many books to read when I don't remember if I have.
Hahahha, I think we all have that memory sickness on here!

I think I read this book for Halloween Bingo as well, two years ago. I found I liked it and am planning on reading the rest of St. James's work. As much as I love reading romance, I think the romance in this book really did take second place to the haunting. I was more drawn into Maddie's story than any of the main characters'. Great review!
Yeah, the first sex scene was, odd. Maddy's dominated for me, too. I probably saw you read this two years ago and that was why I added it, lol. So many friends enjoy this writer that I can't believe I've never read her.
