I like the idea and the thriftiness of it but it's all too much work for me. I saved up a bunch and started to card it and decided it was way too much bother and placed it outside for the birds to use for their nests.

They did! Well some of it anyway. They always build an enormous nest right outside my window and it's fascinating to watch them gather all kinds of debris from the yard and weave it into a nest.

I have two Siberian Huskies and they shed enough to keep an entire family warm in winter. A friend of mine in the UK spins the fur shed by his huskies and is experimenting with various natural dyes - he is actually very good at it :)

Wow that's great. It takes a lot of work and skill. I really wish I had the patience and time to learn how to do it right.

Yeah I don't see why you couldn't use cat hair as well though getting most cats to sit still for a brushing might be a problem. I have four and only one of them lets me do it and he's the one with the shortest coat and needs it the least.
