Meanwhile my ancestors were in the New Haven Colony, grimly not celebrating. (They were so hard-core Puritan the New England Colony wasn't godly enough for them!)
The phrase "grimly not celebrating" I now love - and then when they did acknowledge any holiday they only grimly celebrated, because of course one can't really enjoy it, that would be wrooooooong. This is always one of those points where I am SO happy not to have lived in that time period!
