I was lucky; I know what generation and type kindle I have (keyboard 3), and I had actually updated it recently enough that I didn't have to do it again.
My mother was banned from attempting to turn on the TV at least 25 years ago. She tried to turn it on (this was a model from the late 60s, so still had dials), by turning the dial to the station number of the cable number that was listed in the TV guide. And then she did something else, because the signal wasn't coming in. It took Bob and I 45 minutes to figure out what she did!
She was then given standing orders to *not* attempt to turn the TV on by herself! She's gotten me out of the bathtub to do so, but I'd rather do that than see what mayhem she could commit on the poor defenseless TV set.
You need to check your model (if it's older than 2013? I think), and what the version is. If it's not up to date, you need to update it today, or you'll have to manually update it.

I just checked into. I do have a new model, so I don't have to worry.
I feel your pain. Not so much with the Kindle thing but with the mom/tv thing. We recently had to drive over a half an hour each way because my mom pressed the wrong button and her tv wouldn't come on. (It took less than 30 secs to fix).

Update? I've heard nothing of this! They lost my folders for me once before.
The update was really out of the blue - supposedly they sent notes to everyone, but unless you had wireless on, you'd not get them on your kindle. And then the webpage they created to tell you didn't answer all potential questions.
I'm still amused by the fact that the off button no longer has an option for off (well before there was just no option, you'd hold button down and it'd turn off) - now it's options: Cancel, Restart, and Turn off screen. Turn off screen seems to turn off the device, but seems weird to just say that it's only turning off the screen. Maybe I'm being too literal? Heh.
I am SO PSYCHED that I am not alone with the Parents and Mysteries of the TV Set. It's like some kind of secret club we have - along with Children Who Are Tech Support for Parents. I count the number of devices mom now has and sigh.
Yeh that supposed notice never came to anyone in my house and we have 7 registered Kindles here. all have been on with wifi. I am really miffed at them, I found out through a reading buddy or I would have been out in the cold with my favorites older models.
My mum isn't too bad with the tv, she's even worked out Netflix on her iPad and how to make it play on the telly too. My grandad's the problem. He has more than one type of dementia and it causes him to misunderstand simple instructions one day that he was fine with the day before. We've set it up so that he only has to push a couple of buttons in order to turn the tv on and find the correct show and then turn it off, but he will often come over for dinner (he lives in a granny flat and eats with us every night) and tell us that he's spent the last random number of hours trying to get his tv to work. What frustrates me most is that he doesn't call one of us over to help him, he just persists in pushing buttons, likely making things worse.
My mom is awesome with technology - she's going to be 92 this year and thinks nothing of upgrading the hardware on her own computer and she buys the newest iPhones. She even found a bug in Quicken during the Windows 7 upgrade and figured out how to fix it for them.
BUT, karma doubles back on my with my in-laws. They have iPads and iPhones and AppleTV and I'm the one they come to for all of it. It took forever to get my FIL to understand that the AppleTV was not a cable box and no, he could not get FoxSports on it. FOREVER!!! My MIL won't even touch the TV, thank goodness although she's much easier to explain things to.
Oh, is this why I couldn't connect today? I have an older model, but my husband has a newer model, and we share an account, so I haven't heard anything about needing to update.
I keep wi-fi on my Kindle permanently off. Whenever I buy an ebook, I always upload it to my computer first and then transfer it to my Kindle via USB. This way, Amazon doesn't have access to my Kindle, so they can't change the content. Which they do, unfortunately, when a Kindle connects to the internet by itself. I DON"T TRUST Amazon. So I guess I don't need an update. Right?
