I loved the idea of this book, but the book itself disappointed me. It was often hard to follow, and it had no real resolution. Worse, the characters came across as flat. Interesting as an intellectual exercise, but satisfying? Not so much. Glad to know that I am not alone.
I quite liked the open-endedness of Ursula's story but some of the leads were nothing more than annoying red herrings. I think, your assessment of the story being an interesting intellectual exercise is very to the point. The concept is great but something went awry in the execution. (No pun intended.)
I have had this on my TBR a long time. Every time I think I might give it a go I once again talk myself out of it. Something about this book doesn't sit right with me. I initially added because everyone was oohing and ahhing over it. Glad to hear a different side of the story. I might skip this altogether.
I started reading GOD RUINS last summer and I was liking it. Unfortunately life got in the way, the book was due at the library then I has to paused it. I read about 30%. I was liking it better than LIFE AFTER LIFE.
Yes, someone else recommended AGIR today, too. They had a similar experience - didn't like LAL but enjoyed AGIR. They said the narrative was more linear than LAL - which to be honest, I might find less interesting (the back and forth is an aspect I enjoyed in LAL), but each to their own. I hope you get to finish it some time. It'd be great to read your impressions of it.
AGIR is not so messy, but it is not so lineal either. It jumps between different moments of Teddy's life. I'd say you'll enjoy it. I hope to read it sometime this winter.
