I share the sentiment. Books like "Armadillo" and "Restless" stick in my mind and I know that they're well written, but I don't really enjoy them. Perhaps there's a just a little too much self-consciousness in the use of language and structure. It gives shape but not flavour

Thanks. It's good to know I'm not alone in this. There is definitely some holding back in his books that does not work.

I've only ever read Restless by him but I did enjoy it. I'll admit though his others haven't appealed.

Yeah, this was the one that appealed to me most. I've looked into restless but I don't think it would keep me interested somehow. I think I'd have the same problem as with this one in that I know there must be non-fiction out there that also tells the story of ex-spies and that I would rather read the non-fiction about this topic.
