Wow, that's a lot of living in 27 years. Thanks for the review, In the Shadow of Islam sounds interesting; I think I'd like the unrelated vignettes more than a cohesive narrative for this subject matter.

I'd definitely recommend the book. And doesn't her bio sound amazing? I mean, plenty of hardship for sure, but in the end she chose the desert over anything else and her love for the region comes across in the book.
Ever since I started looking for early lady travelers, I keep coming across these fascinating people. It's quite inspiring.

They are, but the more of the stories I read the more I got the impression there was a common theme she stuck to, which came across as a stylised account, if that makes sense. Still, pretty impressive. (And of course, I had to read in translation...)
